Transferring a Curse or a Voluntary Sacrifice
“Can an adoptive mother take upon herself the curse of her adopted daughter? A gypsy once predicted that my mother would die at the age of thirty, but when she turned thirty, my grandmother died instead of her. My mother’s adoptive parents also passed away. How can I know whether anything from this curse still remains upon me?”
Most likely, no — it was neutralized. Such things happen quite often. It is the situation in which one woman dies in place of another, a form of voluntary sacrifice. According to Christian tradition, such a sacrifice is believed to erase and nullify all sins completely. Ancient pagan tradition also explains this phenomenon. It teaches that one who truly loves must be willing to share the fate of the one they love. Here, love becomes the proof itself — for the sake of a loved one, one may even sacrifice one’s own life. In this case, we are speaking of one’s own child, whether by blood or by adoption. And this means that no curse remains.
A gypsy may have foretold, predicted, or cursed. If it was a prediction or a reading, then it means she perceived information about a negative development of fate — something connected to lineage, family patterns, or previous incarnations. As for placing a curse or causing harm, even gypsies do not do such things without cause. Another matter is that gypsies may impose a punishment for reasons that, to others, would seem no fault at all — a hostile glance or the need to sharply dismiss their persistent begging. What would not normally be considered guilt for another person may, within their own tribal code, be treated as sufficient cause. Such power was given to them. Much else may have been taken away, but this ability remained. It is something to keep in mind.
Whether this seems fair or unfair to you — frightening or difficult to understand — for now, this is simply how things are. If you wish to truly understand this matter, begin by studying the history and magical traditions of the gods of this people. And when you study them deeply enough, perhaps they themselves will reveal certain secrets to you. Then you may come to understand why such power was granted to them.
