Why Do Religions Forbid Magic?

AD LIB Department, Magic in Q&A

Why do religions forbid magic, divination and sorcery? Religion is an ertificial formation. Magic can undermine or destroy religion. Religions prohibit magic.

Why do religions prohibit magic, divination, and sorcery?

“Religions forbid magic, divination, and sorcery. Why?”

To understand why religion forbids magic — as well as divination, sorcery, and all other magical manifestations — one must first understand what religion truly is. No matter how many definitions we give it, they do not fully explain this particular effect: why religion so persistently opposes magic. If we separate and examine these two concepts — magic and religion — perhaps we may come closer to understanding why one harbors such hostility toward the other.

Religion is an ordered system, an egregorial structure of considerable power, capable of shaping chaotic emanations into a defined form of order according to its own rules, laws, and traditions.

Since every religion is, by its nature, an artificial formation, it must struggle for its survival throughout its existence. Only that which is natural possesses natural sources of nourishment. Consequently, religion depends upon those who carry within themselves such sources of sustenance.

The elements are biological forces, and therefore they are expressed through human beings. Thus, the struggle is ultimately for adherents. Human beings are the primary source of chaos, because the degree of unpredictability within them is immense. Accordingly, if a religion succeeds in implanting within human consciousness a matrix, a structure capable of transforming the chaos of both the outer and inner worlds automatically — without the need for constant oversight from the religious system itself — then the function of religion may be considered not merely fulfilled, but capable of multiplying itself in geometric progression. And what, in opposition to this, does magic do?

What Does Magic Do?

Magic introduces certain “injections,” certain algorithms capable of altering any structure. It is able, on the one hand, to uncover vulnerabilities within that structure, and on the other, to introduce such a force that those weaknesses can no longer be ignored or concealed. As a result, structures begin to strain and crack; they cease to remain whole and gradually lose the ability to fulfill their function. Naturally, no religion would welcome such interventions — especially if it is an artificial formation. A natural system, by contrast, would say: “Show me more. The more flaws you uncover, the stronger I will become.” An artificial system is different. Like mistletoe living upon a living tree, it has no inherent right to exist upon natural systems and continues to survive only so long as it is willingly accepted.

Each such injection carries the threat that acceptance will no longer remain voluntary. And so, these injections are resisted. For religion, they represent anything capable of changing its structure. The only force equal to — or greater than — any religion is magic.

Every religion forbids magic, divination, and sorcery — unless, of course, such practices are sanctioned by the religion itself. In other words, if a priest performs acts of “magic,” for example through exorcism, it is considered acceptable; but if a village sorcerer does the same, it is condemned. Thus, everything depends upon sanction and upon whether the religious system has prepared itself — or failed to prepare itself — for a particular kind of “injection”.

Magic provokes religion because it possesses the capacity to undermine and even destroy it — and religion understands this perfectly well. Magic illuminates vulnerabilities. It introduces such “injections,” uncovers such hidden fractures, that things unnoticed for thousands of years suddenly become impossible to ignore. It is like finding the precise point upon which a single pressure can trigger resonance, awaken the fatigue hidden within the material, and cause the entire structure to collapse through one exact touch. Magic is precisely that force which not only perceives the vulnerable point, but is also capable of pressing upon it.

About the Menshikova School

The Menshikova School offers education in magic, Runes, the Elements, and Tarot.

Ksenia Menshikova is the founder and head of the School, as well as the author of books on the development of magical abilities.

The School’s mission is to pass on to students the technologies and methodologies that awaken and develop their magical potential.

Magical consciousness is not a “gift from above,” but the result of deliberate self-transformation through will and reason. Only those who possess both can truly become a mage.
