Black dogs in dreams – Hecate’s messengers

A black dog, especially in a dream, is a symbol of contact with a very ancient chthonic deity whose name in our tradition is known as Hecate. A black dog is always a guard, a watchdog between worlds. Meaning that black dogs are symbols of sentinels, which don’t let the mind cross from one world into another. Especially in dreams this happens very fast, unsanctioned.

So dogs are these guards, and they can be found in all cultures, in all traditions. There is always a hound watching over these sorts of processes.

Black dogs are fellow travellers of the goddess Hecate. She is the one who opens up realms, she is the goddess of crossroads. Thus, she can either let a person cross into another world or close off the passage.

If you dream that you are being attacked by dogs, this means that it’s not a good time for you to cross over to another world. Possibly, at this stage, your contact with this force could be so traumatising that it is best for you to take some time to condition yourself until you are fully ready to perceive the power of your totem bond.

What is a totem?

A totem is a very serious force. It’s not a connection just to a single animal. It is the mind of all animals of that species – all of them – and so, naturally, when you unite with the totem, you absorb its force. You establish contact with this mind. And even though it is an animalistic mind, it is a mind of gargantuan size. Imagine, even if it was a dog. How many dogs do currently exist in our world? A great number. And to perceive all of this force as your own, naturally, one’s mind may not be able to withstand it. The change in behaviour, change in personality; the change in anything in such a great quantity could just be unsafe for one’s well-being.

Hecate is protecting us

She protects us from contacts that could possibly be harmful to us at this time. Which is why in this case, the signs of this goddess are very important, very valuable to us.

She protects us from incorrect contacts just as she protects other worlds from us. She protects because we, too, are similar to a demon, an evil being for many worlds. Meaning that we are heavy; our vibrations are too heavy for some inhabitants of certain worlds.

So, it would be best to take your time, work on yourself, cleanse your Astral body. Possibly, work on your Etheric body, dismantle some of your mental constructs so that your consciousness expands a little. So at the time when this force, the force of your totem sign enters you, it wouldn’t be traumatising nor devastating to you.
