About the Master (Spirit) of a Place

AD LIB Department, Magic in Q&A

About the master of a place. The spirit of a place. Interacting with the spirit of a place when you arrive in a new place. Establiching relationship with the knyaz of the city. The world becomes magical only when you truly believe in it.

About the Master of a Place

The master or spirit of a place with whom we interact — is a very living and active subject. Many hours have been devoted to exploring and discussing it, and there are even books on this topic that we wrote together with our students and forum participants. The subject of the spirit of a place is deeply fascinating and profoundly metaphysical.

“In the new place where I live, local drug addicts and alcoholics periodically approach me asking for money. A couple of times I gave something to one of them in exchange for postcards on which he had written his own poetry. Now I refuse everyone because of my finances and personal convictions. You once said that the spirit of a place may send such people as a form of payment. Should I continue giving, even if I do not feel like it? These marginalized people approach not only me, but all passersby. Should the messages written on those postcards be regarded as communications from the spirit of the place? And could this be connected with working through the rune Uruz, since I am still continuing to establish agreements with the land?”

A colleague writes that she has arrived in a new place — which means that, for now, she does not yet possess established rights there. Such rights must be affirmed and secured through some form of mutually beneficial agreement with the master of the place.

We do see signs, though unfortunately they are not the kind we would prefer. It is not cats seeking affection, nor dogs, nor winged fairies passing by, nor a raven calling beneath the window. Instead, what appears is perhaps the most unpleasant aspect of human society — precisely these marginalized figures. And yet they are rather unusual: intellectual outcasts who write poetry and sign postcards. Nevertheless, the very fact of such contact evokes rejection. What does this reveal? Most likely, that you expected something more. Because you perceive yourself as existing on a higher level than those who approach you. It is unpleasant to admit the possibility that the knyaz of the place does not yet see much difference between you and them.

What can be done in such a situation? One option is to become offended and say, as the colleague wrote: “I do not wish to interact with these agents.”

Magic in Our World

You know, magic will enter our world and our lives and remain within the only when two conditions coincide. The first is when consciousness learns to perceive magical elements within the surrounding reality. The second is when those magical elements find a reflection within the person themselves. To put it in the words of our ancient teachers and ancestors: it is not enough merely to live within a myth — the myth must also live within you. When these two conditions meet, magic happens. But if only one of them is present — usually the external one alone — then magic, as a rule, happens to someone else.

Your relationship with the knyaz of the city — with the spirit of the place — depends upon how you perceive its messengers. If you see them merely as an unpleasant necessity or an irritating burden, then it is better not to begin at all. The world becomes magical only when you truly believe in it. And this means there must be a correspondence between what exists within you and what manifests outside of you in relation to this quality of magic. If you begin working with the land, with the runes, it leads to a genuinely mystical transformation of consciousness.

It is also entirely wrong to impose your expectations upon the land, the runes, or the reality that reflects this force. You will not reach the result that way. Something within yourself must first be transformed. Above all, ask yourself: Why do you not truly believe in this? And when you finally reach the root of that truth, it will become clear how you should interact with the knyaz of this city, with the spirit of the place, and under what conditions.

You may come to the central place of that land, to the point where its forces converge, and speak aloud what it is that you seek. You will receive signs in whatever way the place itself chooses to give them. You must learn to hear those signs and draw your own conclusions from them. That would be honest, and that would be right. But do not impose expectations upon the world regarding what it should be. You may behave this way only toward the reality you create yourself, not toward one that belongs to another. If you wish for another reality to become, in some measure, your own, then you must first accept it exactly as it is.

About the Menshikova School

The Menshikova School offers education in magic, Runes, the Elements, and Tarot.

Ksenia Menshikova is the founder and head of the School, as well as the author of books on the development of magical abilities.

The School’s mission is to pass on to students the technologies and methodologies that awaken and develop their magical potential.

Magical consciousness is not a “gift from above,” but the result of deliberate self-transformation through will and reason. Only those who possess both can truly become a mage.
