Lessons of the Rune Gebo: Maintaining Universal Harmony
The problem with positive thinking, from a magical point of view, lies in this: if you generate nothing but positive emotions around yourself, there will inevitably be a place where entirely negative emotions are produced. Even on the temple of Apollo at Delphi it was inscribed: “Nothing in excess.” Moderation in all things. Among witches, there exists an unspoken yet widely observed rule: if you have done a good deed, go at once and do something bad — so as not to disturb the balance of the world. Immediately, if possible, without delay.
There is an equal measure of everything within a human being. If one begins to cultivate nothing but positivity around oneself, then negativity starts to accumulate in the depths of one’s own nature. If a person possesses strength and does not release this positive force outward, a local contradiction will inevitably arise — a point of imbalance where the negative gathers. And that negativity will, without fail, erupt.
Balance is of Utmost Importance
From a magical point of view, Gebo teaches us balance. It reveals that everything exists within this world. If you reject one aspect of reality, it does not mean that it ceases to exist. It remains. It is only through your own blindness that you fail to see it. Yet it sees you — and, in the name of balance, recognizing you as the source of a local disturbance, that very excess of positivity, it will inevitably bestow negativity upon you in compensation, so that you may express the negativity you have accumulated.
How many of these seemingly benevolent people are there — those who live on nothing but positivity and spread it all around them. Yet dig a little deeper, and negativity will pour out of them at once. It is often quite visible: their sweetness feels forced. The negativity is there within them, but by their inner convictions they strive not to notice it, not to express it. And yet, sooner or later, it reveals itself all the same. And when it does, they say of themselves: “The devil led me astray.”
Everything is within you. Therefore, both negativity and positivity must be released — everything in its measure, and, most importantly, in its proper time. This is the great art: to know where, when, and what to express. Where positivity is needed to compensate for another’s negativity, and where negativity is required to balance an excess of another’s positivity. Only then does equivalence arise. Only then does true harmony unfold.
You must learn to sense and understand what has accumulated within you — these are natural processes. A human being is a living entity: thinking, reflecting, feeling.
A student says: “I am always in the positive.”
Let us move beyond this state of being “always in the positive.” Learn from Gebo — the principle of balance. You are studying now, and it is time to begin seeing that in this world, not only does every human being have the right to exist, but so do the representatives of other worlds. The fact that you do not see them or feel them does not mean they are absent.
It is like the person we spoke of from the very beginning, the one who lives exclusively in positivity: “I do not see evil.” This is how many live — we are human, and all the other, “invisible” inhabitants simply do not exist for us. And so people do not perceive them. Yet in truth, they are there, and it is unwise to ignore the presence of other forms of existence, even those that may seem unsettling. These worlds must simply be studied. There is no need for fear. They occupy their ecological niche, and we occupy ours. Why should it be otherwise? Everything has its place.
